On Wednesday night, the Emir of Kano and former Central Bank Governor of Nigeria, Muhammadu Sunusi II, announced the beginning of the month of Ramadan in Doguwa Local Government Area (LGA) of the State. In accordance with a declaration from the Saudi Arabian government, Muslims all over the world will begin fasting on Thursday. According to the Ramadan timetable of the Directorate of Religious Affairs, Muslims living in Reykjavik, Iceland, will fast for 22 hours and 34 minutes on the first day of Ramadan, the longest fasting duration in the world. In Ushuaia, Argentina, on the other hand, Muslims have the shortest fasting period of eight hours and 57 minutes. Is it justifiable for Muslims over the world to have different fasting duration, or should they all stick to one fasting period? Explain. Sahara Reporters's photo.
