In the spirit of sharing, here are my most important goals across each category this quarter.
✍️Creating: Write a first draft of my book to send to an editor.
🏋️♀️Physical Health: Run more well-being and longevity experiments, which include getting a blood test from Inside Tracker, developing a regular intermittent fasting regime, and doing a 1-week caffeine detox, 1-month alcohol hiatus, and at least one 24-hour fast.
🧠Mental Health: Have a consistent morning routine of hydrating, walking outside for 10 minutes, doing 50 squats, and reading.
📕Learning: Read and publish notes on 5+ books.
⛷Leisure: Go skiing in Lake Tahoe with friends.
👩❤️👨Relationships: Have a Friday dinner date with my partner every week.
💰Finances: Avoid all forms of active investing & any focus on net worth.
Do No Harm
There appears to be a lot of uncertainty, turbulence, fear, and division in the world. I think that the real problems we face and differences between us aren't as large as the narratives you find in the news and on social media, it's clear that many people are struggling.
While some people certainly have it worse than others, the pandemic, societal and economic inequities, and a confluence of political, social, and economic events have taken a toll on everyone.
During times like this, I think it's important to remember to focus on what's within your control and on being the change you'd like to see in the world. So with that, I'd encourage you in 2022 to:
Choose hope over fear: "What good can come from this situation?"
Choose compassion over hatred: "What experiences or information led this person to the conclusions with which I disagree?
Choose listening over judgment: "What can I learn from this person?"
At the very least, try to do no harm.
And if you start getting frustrated with what you see people doing in the world, try to remember that most people are good and doing their best to live an enjoyable life, just like you.
2022 is going to be awesome.
What I'm Reading
Born a Crime by Trevor Noah: I just finished Trevor Noah's memoir about his childhood in South Africa. It's a fun collection of stories.
Of Wolves and Men by Barry Lopez: This book explores wolves, our perceptions of them, and their relationship with people.
The Autobiography of Malcolm X: I watched a movie about Muhammed Ali, and they showed a scene in which Malcolm X was murdered. That made me more curious about Malcolm's story, so I picked up his autobiography to learn more.
In Case You Missed It
Steph Smith and I launched the Sh*t You Don't Learn in School Podcast in mid-2021. While we started with a few friends and family listening, we now have over 10,000 people listening per month.
The goal in 2022 is to get that to 50,000 listens/month.
