Ebonyi flags off centenary celebration, plans to erect tallest tower in South-East

Ebonyi State Governor, Chief Martins Elechi, on Wednesday flagged off activities to mark Nigeria’s Centenary celebration in Abakiliki, the state capital, announcing that it would construct 60- meter tall tower as a monument.

The tower with a beaming clock, according to the state government, would be the highest tower in the south east as a legacy to mark the centenary celebration in the state.

Addressing journalists, the chairman of the 31 member centenary, steering committee in the state, Prof. Chigozie Ogbu stated that the state was expecting the arrival of about 150 Ebonyi indigenes in the Diaspora on Thursday as it would hold a centenary rally at Abakaliki Township Stadium on Saturday.

Ogbu, two-time former Deputy governor of the state said that the tower, the tallest in the southeast geo-political zone is to be located at the entrance of the new State Secretariat Complex being constructed by the government at the Ocho-Udo City and would have a beaming wall clock that could be heard anywhere within the state capital.



He explained that those coming from abroad would be given free hotel accommodation and feeding for three days that the ceremonies would last, as approved by the state government.

He further explained that the Diaspora would be taken round some projects executed by the state government and treated to a banquet.

The committee chairman revealed that state governor; Chief Martin Elechi would on Saturday lay the foundation for the tower, while the Speaker of the state house of assembly, Mr. Chukwuma Nwazunku would unveil the logo of Ebonyi state.

According to Ogbu, the logo would be a sculpture of a man carrying a big hoe, indicating the rich agricultural heritage and hospitality of Ebonyi people.

“It was uninformed to insinuate that the celebration of the centenary was wasteful, rather it is a worthy celebration of the survival of the Nigerian nation. It is a celebration of the union of the country.

“That things are hard, that there is unemployment should not stop our celebrating the centenary, it is enough that we are still one country despite the challenges. In Ebonyi state, it is giving us the opportunity to look back to our past and prepare for the future”, he stated.

Prof. Ogbu urged Nigerians to have faith in the country, adding that despite the present challenges, Nigeria will remain an indivisible entity and the giant of Africa.Peer into the depths
