In a bid to cut the rising cost of eggs in Lagos, the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Lagos chapter, says it will establish direct-to-consumer sales points across all local government areas in the state.
Chairman of PAN Lagos, Mojeed Iyiola, disclosed this during a media briefing, stating that the initiative aims to eliminate middlemen and reduce the retail price of eggs by up to ₦1,000 per crate.
"We are working with local governments in Lagos State to allocate spaces where farmers can sell directly to consumers without the interference of middlemen," Iyiola said.
He noted that while consumers currently pay as much as ₦6,500 for a crate of eggs, farmers only earn between ₦5,000 and ₦5,500 at the farm gate.
"This direct model will help cushion the effect of high poultry prices on the average consumer," he added.

Although the price of maize — a major poultry feed ingredient — has dropped due to government intervention, Iyiola pointed out that the cost of other feed inputs remains unstable.
"Maize accounts for about 60% of feed, but there are 14 other ingredients like methylene, lysine, urea, and groundnut cake that remain expensive," he explained.
For example, the price of a 25kg bag of methylene has jumped from ₦25,000–₦30,000 to over ₦150,000, significantly impacting production costs.
Iyiola called for broader government support to help stabilize the poultry feed market, noting that maize price relief alone is not enough to drive down overall production costs.
