Small businesses across Lagos Island faced a challenging day on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, as the closure of the Independence Bridge (Marina-bound) for repairs led to an unprecedented traffic gridlock.
The congestion, which started as early as 7 a.m., affected key commercial areas, slowing down deliveries and reducing customer foot traffic.
The situation was worsened by heavy rainfall in parts of Victoria Island, causing further delays along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Lekki-Epe Expressway, and Admiralty Way. Some commuters reported being stuck for over 12 hours, with a few arriving home as late as 7 a.m. the next day.

For small business owners, the disruption meant delayed shipments, lower sales, and fewer walk-in customers. Logistics and delivery services also struggled to fulfill orders, affecting businesses that rely on quick turnaround times.
Frustrated commuters and business operators took to social media to express concerns over the lack of alternative routes and poor traffic management.
Some also highlighted the need for better urban planning and transport solutions to ensure business continuity during infrastructure repairs.
Despite the setback, many entrepreneurs are hopeful for smoother adjustments in the coming days and are calling on authorities to implement better traffic control measures to support businesses and commuters alike.
