Olivier Giroud is still facing a battle to retain his position as Arsenal’s No 1 striker despite his Champions League heroics. Giroud was the match-winner on Wednesday night, scoring a hat-trick against Olympiacos to ensure Arsenal’s passage into the Champions League knockout stages for the 16th consecutive season. Nevertheless, signing a new centre forward remains on Arsenal’s agenda, although it is likely to come at the end of the season. In the meantime, the return to fitness of Theo Walcott from a calf injury will keep Giroud occupied. The Frenchman lost his place to Walcott earlier this season before the England star’s injury gave him a route back into the team. Giroud, who is expected to be fit for the clash with Aston Villa on Sunday despite rolling his ankle in Greece, has grasped his opportunity, scoring seven goals in his last nine games. Arsene Wenger could, however, rotate between Giroud and Walcott in the coming weeks to ensure his two recognised strikers stay fresh for the run-in. It is not the first time Giroud’s role at the club has been under the microscope but his response has pleased the manager. Former Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires, who trains regularly with Giroud at the club’s London Colney HQ, has been impressed with the striker’s fighting spirit. QUESTION: Do you think Arsenal are being fair to Giroud by not making him the number one striker at Arsenal?
