The European Union (EU) has reaffirmed its commitment to Nigeria's clean energy transition, announcing that its ongoing energy sector programme will deliver 400 megawatts of new renewable capacity by 2027.
Launched in 2021 with a budget of €100 million (about ₦175 billion), the programme is designed to expand access to sustainable power and directly benefit more than five million Nigerians.
EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, represented by Deputy Ambassador Zissimos Vergos, disclosed this during the Nigeria Renewable Energy Innovation Forum (NREIF) held in Abuja.
He said over €200 million in EU grants has been invested in Nigeria's power sector since 2008, supporting projects that improve energy access and strengthen infrastructure.
"Our most recent energy sector programme, launched in 2021 with a €100 million budget, is aimed at adding 400 megawatts of new renewable capacity by 2027, directly benefitting more than five million Nigerians," Mignot said.
The envoy highlighted the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors, as well as research institutions, in achieving Nigeria's clean energy targets.
"The public sector brings the policy frameworks, the private sector brings agility and expertise, while research institutions bring insight and innovation," he added.

Mignot noted that off-grid renewable solutions are already transforming rural communities, with mini-grids and solar home systems lighting homes, powering small businesses, and boosting productivity.
He emphasised that research-driven innovation and effective regulation will be key to scaling these solutions sustainably, ensuring that energy access continues to drive local economic growth.
Reiterating the EU's commitment, he said the bloc will continue to provide direct research grants, build local capacity, and mobilise private investment through programmes such as GET.invest Nigeria and the EU Global Gateway Initiative.
"The EU remains deeply committed to supporting Nigeria's efforts toward sustainable energy access, clean industry, and inclusive growth," Mignot stated.
The forum, attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Governors of Ogun and Bayelsa States, the Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Abubakar Bagudu, and other stakeholders, focused on bridging the gap between public policy, private investment, and research to fast-track the nation's green energy transition.
