In a bold move to expand energy access and drive inclusive economic growth, the Ondo State Government has entered into a landmark partnership with the Federal Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to power 25 underserved communities across the state.
The collaboration was formalised with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on July 22, 2025, during a strategic energy roundtable in Abuja themed "From Access to Impact: Unlocking Ondo's Renewable Energy Potential for Economic Transformation and Socioeconomic Inclusion."
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa described the partnership as a critical step in his administration's mission to deliver sustainable power solutions to riverine, forested, and agrarian communities such as Ilaje, Bolorunduro, Idanre, Owo, and Akoko. He explained that the state's newly established Rural Electrification Agency—created to mirror and collaborate with the Federal REA—will fast-track implementation of localized power solutions.
"Our Electricity Roadmap aims to power healthcare centres, schools, agro-processing hubs, SMEs and digital infrastructure," said Aiyedatiwa. "This MoU is not just symbolic—it is catalytic. It signals our commitment to making energy access a platform for innovation, job creation, and economic resilience."

He also revealed plans to adopt smart energy technologies such as advanced metering and storage systems to ensure long-term sustainability of the power projects.
REA Managing Director Abba Aliyu announced a $1.6 billion national funding pipeline—sourced through public-private partnerships and climate finance mechanisms—targeted at deploying solar mini-grids and standalone renewable systems in off-grid communities. He praised Ondo's policy readiness, rating it four out of five on the REA's preparedness scale.
"We're ready to light up 25 communities in Ondo. The funding is there, the plan is in place, and Ondo has shown the political will," Aliyu stated.
Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Alabi Johnon, reinforced that the state views energy not just as infrastructure but as the backbone of economic empowerment. "Power drives productivity, fuels innovation, creates jobs and transforms poverty into prosperity," he said.
The partnership represents a major stride toward energy equity and could unlock significant opportunities for small businesses, agriculture, and tech across underserved areas of Ondo State.
