According to an eye witness, the incident happened at about 5.35 pm, when the tanker, which lost control shortly after descending a hill, swerved off the road while negotiating a sharp bend and rolled towards two buildings. The source further revealed that the resultant fire consumed the buildings, while it also spread to surrounding ones and lock‑up shops. Vanguard gathered that the victims included one Mr Ololade, a retired head teacher, two other occupants of the affected buildings, two persons of northern extraction and two people inside the truck. The driver of the tanker, who is now being detained at Aramoko Divisional Police Division and one other occupant, were said have been lucky as they escaped with injuries. The corpses of the victims had been deposited at the morgue of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti. The Ekiti State deputy governor, Prof. Modupe Adelabu, who visited the scene at about 9 a.m. yesterday, lamented that the recklessness of some truck drivers had resulted in untimely death of innocent Nigerians. She said: “This road belongs to the Federal Government, but I want to assure that the state government will do something about it within the next two weeks. This death is painful and we have to do something quickly to avert re-occurence.”
