The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has reiterated the Federal Government's commitment to achieving zero gas flaring by 2030, citing progress through the commission's ongoing flare gas commercialisation initiatives.
Speaking at the International Conference on Hydrocarbon Science and Technology, organised by the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), the Chief Executive of NUPRC, Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, said the country is steadily advancing toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
Komolafe, who was represented by the Executive Commissioner for Corporate Services and Administration, Dr. Kelechi Onyekachi Ofoegbu, noted that the focus of Nigeria's hydrocarbon industry should go beyond production figures or gas monetisation.

He explained that gas previously flared wastefully is now being channelled for productive use—powering homes, fueling small industries, and providing cleaner cooking energy for millions of Nigerians.
Komolafe emphasised that while Africa holds over 125 billion barrels of proven oil reserves and more than 620 trillion cubic feet of gas, and Nigeria alone accounts for 37.28 billion barrels of oil and 210.54 trillion cubic feet of gas, more than 600 million Africans still lack access to electricity.
He stressed that bridging this gap requires balancing resource exploitation with sustainability, innovation, and inclusive energy access, in line with global decarbonisation goals.
