Nigeria's maritime sector has taken a significant leap forward with the arrival of MV Great Cotonou, the first direct roll-on roll-off (RORO) vessel from Shanghai, China. The vessel berthed in Lagos on February 15, marking a new chapter in trade between the two countries.
Unlike traditional shipping routes that require transshipment at intermediary ports, this direct service cuts transit time to just 27 days, eliminating delays and additional handling costs for Nigerian businesses.
Importers can now expect faster and more cost-effective delivery of goods, reducing logistics expenses and improving supply chain efficiency.
The vessel, owned by the Grimaldi Group, offers a multimodal transport solution, accommodating not just containerized cargo but also vehicles, including cars, vans, trucks, and project cargo—all in one shipment. This innovation is expected to benefit SMEs, auto dealers, and manufacturers relying on imported goods.
