In a bold move towards sustainability, the Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the Charitable Network for Community Empowerment (CHANCE), has trained market women in Ikeja's Computer Village on transforming waste into economic opportunities.
The initiative, launched to mark International Women's Day, focused on waste management, upcycling, and urban farming—equipping traders with practical skills to turn trash into treasure.
Founder of CHANCE, Olajumoke Saliu, emphasized that empowering women with waste-to-wealth skills is key to both economic growth and environmental preservation. "A healthy environment fosters a thriving economy, and women play a vital role in this transformation," she noted.

Lagos State officials reinforced the government's commitment to circular economy practices, citing policies against single-use plastics and Styrofoam to curb pollution. Special Adviser Titilayo Oshodi stressed the urgency of climate literacy, while Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih warned of the dangers of poor waste disposal.
Traders welcomed the initiative with enthusiasm, acknowledging new ways to generate income from waste materials like discarded tires and plastics. Iyaloja of Computer Village, Abisola Azeez, praised the program, stating, "This training has opened our eyes to the wealth in waste. We are ready to embrace recycling as part of our business."
With this initiative, Lagos is paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future—one empowered market woman at a time.
