The Gombe State Government has launched a large-scale intervention to support farmers ahead of the 2025 wet farming season, with a 150% increase in subsidised fertiliser supply compared to the previous year.
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, speaking at the official flag-off ceremony, announced the procurement of 10,000 metric tonnes (200,000 bags) of NPK 20:10:10 fertiliser. The input, purchased at N44,000 per bag, will be sold to farmers at a subsidised rate of N27,000.
"This gesture underscores our commitment to making agriculture affordable, accessible, and productive," the governor said, noting that the effort aligns with President Tinubu's Renewed Hope agenda and the state's food security goals.
Governor Yahaya stressed that transparency in the distribution process is paramount. He warned against diversion of fertiliser and instructed the Ministry of Agriculture, security agencies, and civil society organisations to closely monitor the process.

With over 80% of Gombe's population engaged in farming, the fertiliser subsidy is expected to have a major impact on productivity and food supply. The initiative builds on ongoing efforts by the state government to transform its agricultural landscape, including partnerships with the Federal Government, the World Bank, and the African Development Bank through programmes like NG-CARES, RAAMP, L-PRES, and ACReSAL.
The governor also referenced the Agro-Livestock Development Zone and Muhammadu Buhari Industrial Park, which is now home to a new Premier Seeds Nigeria facility, as further evidence of Gombe's positioning as an agro-commercial hub in the North-East.
In addition to boosting food production, the governor called for peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders and reiterated his support for grassroots dispute resolution mechanisms.
Federal Ministry of Agriculture representative Absalom Lansibol commended Gombe State's leadership, stating that the federal government would continue to support efforts that promote food security and economic resilience across Nigeria.
