The former vice-president had in a statement while formally informing the ruling party of his resignation, noted that the party had alienated the electorate and submitted that PDP was beyond redemption. But the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Olisa Metuh, in a statement yesterday accused the former vice-president of disparaging a political party that brought Atiku to political limelight. “The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is shocked and surprised at statements by the APC and opposition leaders including former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, wherein they have continued to pour vituperations and heap blames on the PDP. “Whilst the PDP recognises the inalienable right of citizens to hold opinions and identify with political platforms of their choice, we indeed find it very difficult to understand this type of bitterness towards the party even from persons such as the former vice president who hugely benefitted from the PDP. “However, as the sole custodian of the sacred mandate of over 160 million Nigerians, the PDP will continue to maintain the high moral ground of decency and would not in any way cheapen this sacred mandate by joining in political mudslinging. “While we concede to the inalienable rights of individuals to associate with any political party of their choice, we advice that they should proffer solutions and alternatives rather than engage in constant condemnation. “The PDP wishes the former vice president and others well in their chosen enclave but we pray, that someday, they will find it in their hearts to accord the PDP due recognition for its contributions not only to the development of the country, but also to their individual political progress,” Metuh said. But Metuh’s condemnation came on the heels of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, North-east chapter endorsement of the recent political move of the former vice-president. The Public Relations Officer of the North-east Chapter of CAN, Mr. Jonathan A. Sambo, in response to the former vice-president consultation with the North-east chapter of CAN had said Atiku Abubakar has the credentials and genuine commitment to “foster the unity of Nigeria as a whole.” According to the Northeast CAN spokesman, Atiku was remarkably different from other political “jingoists” seeking power in Nigeria. “We need a liberal leader who will carry everybody along, irrespective of his region, ethnicity or religion,” adding that such is the kind of leader Nigeria urgently needs to overcome her challenges. Reviewing Nigeria’s myriad of challenges, Mr. Jonathan Sambo explained that Nigeria “needs a leader who will salvage us from the manacles of unemployment and the shackles of inadequate electricity.” He further submitted that until Nigeria has such a leader like Atiku, the country would continue to wallow in abject poverty. The Northeast CAN spokesperson said they welcomed Atiku’s defection to APC as a means to offer him the opportunity to serve Nigeria.
