Life Reimagined: 30 Pods in 30 Days, Thinking in Bets, & Creating a Scholarship

🎙Announcing a new podcast with creator Steph Smith!  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Hey uguba ndubuisi, happy Sunday.

This week, we're going to discuss three topics:

  1. A new podcast I launched with creator Steph Smith.
  2. How thinking in bets can improve your decision-making.
  3. New scholarships I'm launching and how to create your own.

Let's get to it!

🎙 Shit You Don't Learn in School Podcast

I launched the Shit You Don't Learn in School podcast last summer to help people improve the quality of their personal and professional lives.

The podcast stemmed from a simple idea:

Formal schooling does a terrible job of preparing us to thrive as adults.

The podcast would fill in the cracks.

But like many attempts to build a new skill or habit, I failed to show up like a professional and keep it going. I recorded 7 episodes and quit.

Now, it's time to do it right. This month, I teamed up with Steph Smith to reignite the podcast and openly try to become a better podcaster.

To improve our skills and get feedback, we're recording one pod every day for 30 days. So far, we've recorded 12 episodes, and it's been heaps of fun.

Each episode is 15-30 minutes of (hopefully) useful and interesting ideas. The first episode with Steph is about how to avoid letting bad days become destructive days. We've also talked about:

  • How to Deal with Comparing Yourself to Others
  • Improving the Quality of Your Sleep
  • Should Remote Companies Pay People Based on Location?
  • Mastering the Art of Learning New Skills
  • Learning How to Give Back in Ways That Resonate
  • How to Build a Rewarding Career & Minimize Regret
  • Staying in Touch with Friends and Family in Adulthood
  • Understanding Your Relationship with Money
  • Navigating the Complexities of the Modern Era
  • The Pitfalls of Zeroism

You can check out the full list of episodes and listen here.

If you're up for it, I'd appreciate if you could listen to an episode or two on topics you're interested in and let us know what you think.

What do you like? What can we improve? What topics would you like us to talk about? You can respond directly to this email.

We're in complete beginner mode now, so open to all feedback. The goal is to build the habit of podcasting and to learn how to do it better in a sustainable and enjoyable way. Appreciate your help on that journey.

I hope you enjoy and look forward to hearing your thoughts.

🤔 Thinking in Bets by Annie Duke

I recently finished professional poker player and superstar decision-maker Annie Duke's book, Thinking in Bets. Duke's book dives deep on an important idea:

Everything in life is a bet, which is a decision about an uncertain future.

As we make bets throughout our lives – changing jobs, choosing partners, making investment decisions, and so on – it's important that we learn how to make smarter bets and learn from the outcomes of our decisions.

"The cumulative effects of being a little better at decision-making, like compounding interest, can have huge effects in the long run on everything that we do." - Annie Duke

I took tons of notes on the books and published them here:

You can also access these notes in the Psychology section of Foundations if you have access to the product.

If you're interested in a primer on this topic before reading the book, check out Howard Mark's short memo, You Bet!

This memo alone will give you 80% of the value that you get from the book. Marks breaks down Duke's ideas beautifully, leveraging many concepts from her book to talk about how to make better investing decisions.

👩‍🎓 New Scholarships + How to Start Your Own

I'm scaling up the number of scholarships I'm giving out every year. Over the last two weeks, I launched two new ones:

Financial Freedom Scholarship: As a small way to create a more equal financial playing field, this scholarship exists to support an ambitious student who is motivated to improve his or her life through education.

Choose Courage Over Comfort Scholarship: To encourage people to confront their fears and build more meaningful lives, this scholarship will support a courageous and ambitious person who wants to grow.

The deadlines for the Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship and the Equal Opportunity Scholarship are approaching this month.

If you have any interest in creating a scholarship, I published a new article that outlines how you can set up a scholarship in an easy and tax-deductible way:

How to Start a Scholarship Fund in 9 Easy Steps

If you have any questions about the scholarships I run or how to start your own, please don't hesitate to reach out.
