3 Questions... | about inflation | The Labor Department’s latest Consumer Price Index report dropped last week. I asked finance editor Molly Moorhead, whose team reported on the new inflation data, to break it down. |
|
| | Refresh me: What does the Consumer Price Index measure? |
|
| The CPI looks at price changes in an array of everyday goods and services. Think food, clothes, rent, medicine and more. |
| |
| | Are these newest numbers good or bad news? |
|
| The CPI rose 0.3% in April from the previous month, lower than economists projected. I think the report is encouraging, but to be truly good news, we’ll want to see two or three months of inflation coming down. |
| |
| | So where is inflation cooling? |
|
| My team found that consumers are getting some relief at the gas pump, and rent increases are finally slowing. Another plus: Airfares are stabilizing just in time for summer. |
| |
| How else has inflation affected prices? Read the full report. | |
