3 Questions... | about food and mental health | The food you eat can affect your mental health, and vice versa. Anthony asked resident wellness editor Erin Donnelly about what nutritionists told her team about the connection. |
|
| | Your team just reported on six foods that are good for mental health. What’s so good about them? |
|
| We did. They all have "antidepressant nutrients" such as iron and omega-3 fatty acids. An expert told us these can promote brain health and help stabilize blood sugar, preventing mood swings — and "hanger.” |
| |
| | Which foods can harm mental health and why? |
|
| Foods high in saturated fats, carbs and sugar tend to spike blood sugar levels, which can lead to moodiness, fatigue and feeling low. Unfortunately, a lot of what we consider “comfort foods” fall into this category. |
| |
| | If comfort foods negatively affect mental health, why are they called comfort foods? |
|
| Because they feel familiar. The sugar high they provide is an instant, but short-lived, pick-me-up. An expert told our reporter that over time those spikes can harm brain health. Eating them in moderation is key. |
| |
| Many people crave certain foods when they're sad. Here's why. | |
