The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) says it is stepping up efforts to promote indigenous shipping and increase Nigerian participation in seaborne trade, in line with the Federal Government's Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking during the agency's special day at the ongoing 36th Enugu International Trade Fair, NIMASA's Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, urged private investors and business groups to tap into the numerous opportunities within Nigeria's growing blue economy.
Represented by the agency's Deputy Director, Strategic Development, Umar Mohammed Salisu, Mobereola said NIMASA has adopted an integrated strategy for maritime transport development.
He noted that the agency is focusing on critical investment areas such as:an innovative shipbuilding scheme for fleet acquisition by Nigerian operatorsthe establishment of a National Carrier Line to participate in international trademore maritime academies to train competitive seafarersand a Public Sector Cargo Support Programme to secure freight opportunities for local carriers

Mobereola explained that these steps are aimed at reducing Nigeria's reliance on foreign shipping companies and enabling local operators to compete in international markets. He added that public-private partnerships are central to NIMASA's approach.
In his remarks, he commended the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for creating an enabling environment for trade and investment through the trade fair, describing the event as an ideal platform for attracting investors into the maritime sector.
Also speaking at the event, the President of the Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA), Sir Odeiga Jideonwo, acknowledged NIMASA's vital role in Nigeria's maritime economy.
