The Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC) has officially taken over electricity regulation in the state, marking a major shift for power-related businesses.
With the release of Order No. LASERC ORDER/001/2025, LASERC now fully replaces the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in Lagos, in line with the Electricity Act 2023 and Lagos Electricity Law 2024.
Small businesses involved in electricity supply, distribution, or related services must now obtain a valid license or permit from LASERC. Licenses issued by any other authority will no longer be recognised.
According to LASERC, all unlicensed operators must cease operations immediately or face penalties — a minimum fine of ₦20 million and a daily fine of ₦20,000 for every day of violation.

Businesses uncertain about their status have been advised to seek formal clarification to avoid costly sanctions.
"This order reaffirms LASERC's mandate to ensure a safe and efficient electricity market," said Dr. Fouad Animashaun, CEO of LASERC. "We're committed to protecting consumers and encouraging investor confidence in Lagos."
For small businesses, compliance is now key to staying legally active in the power sector under the new regime.
