Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged lawmakers to enact policies that enhance food security and nutrition, stressing their impact on economic growth, businesses, and national stability.
Speaking at a meeting with the National Legislative Network on Nutrition and Food Security, Shettima highlighted the Nutrition 774 Initiative, spearheaded by President Bola Tinubu's administration, to improve food access and affordability.
He emphasized the need for legislative reforms, including removing multiple taxation on food products, a burden that increases costs for small businesses in the food sector. He also advocated for policies supporting infant nutrition, such as extending maternity leave.

"For too long, our approach to malnutrition has been fragmented and donor-driven. We need government-led, well-funded solutions because food security cannot be outsourced," he said.
Chairman of the House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, Chike Okafor, added that lawmakers are reviewing policies that directly impact food entrepreneurs, including regulations on bulk food sales and price stability measures.
