The Chairman of Ijebu Ode Local Government, Dare Alebiosu, has announced that all major markets in the area, including Ita Osu, Ita Ale, and Oke Aje, will reopen on Monday, July 21, after a one-week closure in honour of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Alebiosu clarified that the closure was a mark of respect during the customary mourning period and dismissed rumours that markets would remain closed for 75 days as "completely false."
"Markets were closed in honour of our highly revered royal father," the statement read. "We are reopening to ensure our people do not suffer unnecessary economic hardship."
He expressed gratitude to traders and residents for their patience and cooperation during the mourning period, emphasizing the council's commitment to tradition and public welfare.
The markets, which have been shut since Monday, July 14, will resume full operations from Monday morning.
