Minister of Agriculture and… | By Abimbola Akomolafe on September 18, 2025 | The Federal Government is expanding investments in staple crops such as tomatoes cassava and maize to fight hunger and malnutrition while unlocking fresh opportunities for small and medium sized enterprises across Nigeria. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Abubakar Kyari said the programme is designed to boost productivity reduce post harvest losses and strengthen food security while delivering strong financial returns for farmers processors and SME investors in the agricultural value chain. Read also, According to the plan Nigeria will expand tomato cultivation to 72000 hectares in Kano Bauchi and Borno with a target of $860 million in value creation. A $382 million cassava programme will cover 207000 hectares in Ogun Oyo and Anambra directly benefiting 45000 farmers and impacting more than 300000 people through SMEs in processing storage and distribution. The initiative will also establish 375 processing units including mobile facilities while supporting farmer cooperatives with finance seeds fertilizers and training. By promoting high quality cassava flour starch and maize feed production the government aims to reduce imports and create an enabling environment for SMEs in food processing packaging logistics and input supply. | | | |
