The International Cocoa Diplomacy (ICD) has called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to boost the quality of cocoa production and expand the value chain through local processing.
Speaking ahead of the 2025 Lagos International Trade Fair, ICD Convener, HRM Queen Angelique-Monet Thompson, said Africa produces about 70 percent of global cocoa but processes less than two percent into finished products such as chocolate.
At a joint press conference with the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Queen Angelique-Monet announced that the Eko Chocolate Show, one of the main attractions at this year's fair, will showcase opportunities in value addition and sustainable trade partnerships.

She said the initiative aims to bridge the gap between Africa's cocoa dominance and its low participation in global chocolate manufacturing, adding that the premium chocolate market—valued at over $140 billion—is expanding rapidly with growing demand for ethically sourced African cocoa.
The event will feature exhibitions, stakeholder forums, and cultural showcases including the Royal Cocoa International Film Festival and Symphony Orchestra Concert. According to her, these activities will position Lagos as Africa's emerging hub for chocolate trade and innovation.
LCCI Trade Promotions Director, Shola Oluwadare, said the collaboration with ICD will spotlight Nigeria's potential in cocoa value addition and help farmers earn better revenue through improved market access.
Trade Promotions Chairman, Abimbola Olasore, added that the 2025 Fair would combine commerce and culture, reinforcing partnerships that drive economic growth and enhance Nigeria's global trade presence.
