The Jigawa State Government has launched a large-scale date palm production programme designed to create jobs and boost agricultural output. The initiative entails planting over 200,000 date palm seedlings across 1,042 hectares of land in selected Local Government Areas.
As part of the scheme, more than 2,000 youths have been trained and engaged as custodians of the plantations, equipping them with skills in nursery management, planting techniques, and long-term maintenance of the trees. Officials say the project aims to provide sustainable income opportunities and promote agribusiness among young people.
According to the state government, the programme is expected to diversify Jigawa's economy, reduce youth unemployment, and position the state as a key player in Nigeria's growing date production market.
