Katsina State is stepping up its renewable energy agenda with the deployment of over 20 megawatts (MW) of solar power with battery storage across hospitals, schools, and water facilities.
This initiative aims to provide steady electricity supply to critical public services, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and lower operational costs for small businesses that rely on these facilities.
In addition to the solar installations, the government has revived the long-stalled Katsina wind farm, injecting an extra 10MW of solar power to complement the existing wind-solar hybrid system.
The project is expected to stabilize power generation, ensuring a more reliable energy mix that can support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in rural and urban communities.
According to officials, the solar expansion will create opportunities for local contractors, installers, and maintenance service providers, opening up new markets for renewable energy entrepreneurs.
SMEs in the solar supply chain, including equipment vendors and battery technology providers, stand to benefit from increased demand.
Experts say the combination of solar and wind energy will reduce energy costs for businesses and strengthen Katsina's position as a hub for green investments. With improved access to affordable electricity, small businesses in health, education, and water-related services are expected to experience significant growth and improved productivity.
