In a landmark move to accelerate gas-driven industrialisation, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), the Akwa Ibom State Government, and the Gas Aggregation Company Nigeria Ltd/GTE (GACN) have signed a $3.5 billion Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at transforming the South-South region into a major gas hub.
The agreement was formalised during the South-South Gas Utilisation Forum 2025, held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and attended by key government and industry stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, emphasized that natural gas is central to Nigeria's path to sustainable economic growth and energy security.

Leading the NNPCL delegation were Udy Ntia, Executive Vice President of Upstream and Chairman of the GACN Board, and Olalekan Ogunleye, Executive Vice President for Gas, Power, and New Energy. Also present was Chijioke Uzoho, Managing Director of GACN.
Representing Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Commissioner for Economic Development, Emem Bob, reaffirmed the state's commitment to leveraging gas for job creation and industrial development.
According to NNPCL's statement, the MoU represents a joint commitment to unlocking the gas potential of the region, fostering inclusive development, and stimulating economic diversification.
The forum also served as a platform for aligning public and private sector interests around gas utilisation strategies. A cultural evening and GACN's annual dinner capped off the event, with a keynote address by Minister Ekpo highlighting gas as a cornerstone of regional transformation.
