In a bold step to address the economic and health challenges facing widows, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has launched a comprehensive Widows Welfare Scheme targeting 10,000 women across the state.
Speaking at the official launch held at the Event Centre in Asaba, Governor Oborevwori described widowhood as a deeply painful condition that often leaves women vulnerable. "Being a widow is not by choice, and it comes with the burden of survival. Our administration is committed to easing that burden and restoring hope," he stated.
Under the new scheme, each widow will receive a monthly stipend of N15,000, paid directly into their bank accounts. To kick-start the initiative, beneficiaries will immediately receive N45,000, representing three months' arrears.
Beyond financial aid, the programme also includes free healthcare access for all enrolled widows. They will be automatically registered under the Delta State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme, granting them free treatment at public hospitals and health centres.
Governor Oborevwori emphasized the critical role of healthcare support, noting, "This health insurance is even more important than the stipends because it ensures no widow is denied care due to lack of funds."
Coordinated by the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Social Investment Programmes, Elder Isioma Okonta, the initiative marks a significant milestone in the state's social welfare efforts, aiming to empower widows and improve their quality of life.
