President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Tokyo, Japan, kicking off his two-nation official trip with attendance at the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) — his first visit to Japan since taking office in May 2023.
Landing at Haneda International Airport shortly before 1 a.m. local time, Tinubu was welcomed by Japan's Ambassador in charge of TICAD, Hideo Matsubara. His visit highlights Nigeria's renewed focus on global partnerships and economic diplomacy.
TICAD9, which will run from August 20 to 22, 2025, in Yokohama, serves as Japan's premier platform for collaboration with African nations. This year's theme, "Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa," reflects a joint commitment to driving sustainable development through technology, investment, and strategic alliances.

During the summit, President Tinubu will hold high-level bilateral meetings with world leaders and engage Japanese investors to promote Nigeria as a prime destination for private sector investment across energy, manufacturing, digital innovation, agriculture, and infrastructure.
The event brings together African heads of state, development agencies, global corporations, and civil society leaders to discuss Africa's economic transformation, peacebuilding, and institutional growth.
TICAD—co-hosted by the Japanese government, UN, UNDP, World Bank, and African Union Commission—has played a major role in shaping Japan-Africa relations since 1993. The forum emphasizes African-led development supported by international collaboration.
Tinubu's participation is expected to deepen Nigeria-Japan relations and unlock new opportunities for trade, human capital development, and technological partnerships that support Nigeria's long-term growth ambitions.
