The leadership of Onitsha's Ogbo-Ogwu Bridgehead Medicine Market has raised fresh alarm over alleged plots by a "cabal" to reintroduce fake and substandard drugs into the market.
Caretaker Committee Chairman accused certain traders—led by a man previously banned by NAFDAC—of sparking unrest to force out the current executives, citing their anti–fake drug policies as the main target.
The market, recently reopened after a NAFDAC raid that shut it for months, has been plagued by clashes between the executive and a faction under the "Concerned and Genuine Members of Ogbo-Ogwu Market." Disputes include resistance to monthly prayers, forced opening of sealed shops, and obstruction of illicit drug inspections.
"We've petitioned NAFDAC and the Anambra State Government to investigate these individuals before their actions lead to bloodshed," the chairman warned, stressing that their measures have crippled fake drug merchants' operations.
The executives insist they are determined to protect the market's integrity, urging regulators to act swiftly before the crisis escalates.
