The Federal Government has announced plans to revitalize the nation's Silo Concession Programme to reduce post-harvest losses, strengthen food storage, expand opportunities for SMEs in the agricultural value chain.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, said the initiative targets Nigeria's estimated $10 billion annual post-harvest losses. He noted that improved silo storage systems will help farmers, processors, SMEs cut wastage while ensuring steady food supply.

Currently, only one of 17 silo complexes concessioned to private operators is fully functional, while many others face vandalism, collapsed structures, non-compliance issues. To fix this, the Ministry will work with the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) to enforce compliance, reclaim abandoned facilities.
The programme, aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's agricultural transformation agenda, is expected to improve food security, create jobs, unlock new markets for SMEs engaged in processing, logistics, input supply.
