The Senate Committee on Agricultural Production Services and Rural Development has held a public hearing on three major bills aimed at transforming Nigeria's agricultural sector. The session, chaired by the committee's chairman, focused on policies to strengthen local production while empowering farmers and agribusinesses.
The bills under review include the Cassava Flour (Mandatory Inclusion into Flour Production) Bill, the National Food Reserve Agency (Establishment) Bill, and the Rice Development Council of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill. Lawmakers say these will promote food self-sufficiency, improve rural livelihoods, and expand opportunities for smallholder farmers and agro-SMEs.

Speaking at the hearing, the committee chairman and sponsor of two of the bills emphasized the importance of diversifying Nigeria's food base and reducing dependence on imports. He noted that building sustainable value chains will help farmers and agro-entrepreneurs access markets, financing, and technical support.
Stakeholders from government, industry, and academia also shared recommendations to ensure the bills reflect both national priorities and grassroots realities. The committee reaffirmed its commitment to building a resilient agricultural economy that drives food security, job creation, and inclusive growth.
