The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) has launched the Women at Sea website to promote the inclusion and advancement of women in the maritime industry.
The platform, introduced on March 7, 2025, by ITF affiliates, aims to build a global network for female seafarers while emphasizing the importance of trade union membership.
During the launch webinar, industry experts and female seafarers shared insights on fostering inclusivity in maritime. Chief Engineer and Fleet Manager Elisza Chomi highlighted the need for continuous learning, especially with the rise of green technology and larger vessels.
A Maersk representative addressed the ongoing need for safer protective gear in gender-appropriate sizes, vessel design improvements, and training on handling workplace challenges.
ITF Maritime Coordinator Jacqueline Smith chaired the session, joined by IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez. Additionally, a 24/7 helpline by Sailors' Society was announced, providing female seafarers with confidential support from female professionals.
