The Lagos State Government has commenced the reconstruction of Oregun Theatre, aiming to transform it into a multi-functional cultural hub as part of a broader plan to expand the state's entertainment infrastructure.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, highlighted the government's commitment to the creative sector, emphasizing that the state's youthful population—comprising 60 to 70% of residents— is a major factor driving such initiatives.
"We recognize that our youth have unconventional thinking and immense creative potential. This project is a response to their needs, ensuring that accessible creative spaces exist across Lagos," Benson-Awoyinka stated.

The redeveloped theatre will include a performance venue, a cinema, and other modern amenities, designed to serve the artistic community while reducing congestion in commercial districts.
Benson-Awoyinka noted that the project would serve as an alternative entertainment hub, particularly during festive seasons when major malls experience overwhelming foot traffic.
"Every year, the mall down the road is packed beyond capacity, and we've had to involve government agencies to manage potential stampede risks. This theatre will help distribute that pressure," she explained.
This initiative aligns with the state government's vision to enhance cultural infrastructure and provide accessible creative spaces for Lagos residents.
