In a move small businesses can learn from, the Kaduna State Ministry of Health has launched baby creches in key government institutions to promote breastfeeding and support working mothers.
This initiative, part of activities for the 2025 World Breastfeeding Week, highlights the theme "Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create a Sustainable Support System."
Commissioner for Health, Umma Kaltum-Ahmed, described the creches as a bold step toward inclusive, gender-friendly workplaces, ensuring women don't have to choose between work and childcare.
Located at the Health Ministry, Barau Dikko Hospital, Kaduna State University, and the State Secretariat, the facilities are fully equipped and supported by the World Bank's ANRiN Project.

The message is clear for SMEs: supporting working mothers through practical solutions like workplace childcare boosts productivity, peace of mind, and staff retention. ANRiN's Project Manager, Zainab Baru, noted that such support reduces stress and enhances child nutrition at the community level.
Permanent Secretary Aishatu Abubakar added that when mothers have their babies nearby, their focus and performance improve something small businesses can emulate on a smaller scale.
Representing Deputy Governor Hadiza Balarabe, Commissioner Rabi Umar encouraged other institutions to follow suit.
This initiative sets a benchmark not only for public institutions but also for private and small businesses looking to create healthier, more inclusive work environments.
