The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has called on Nigerians to back President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's agricultural reforms, describing them as the path to food sovereignty and national self-reliance. His remarks came as the nation marked its 65th Independence Day.
Kyari said agriculture must be seen as more than a sector, but the foundation of true independence. He noted that the Tinubu administration is determined to harness Nigeria's arable land and resources to ensure that families are fed and that farmers thrive through government-backed programmes.
He stressed that smallholder farmers, who form the backbone of Nigeria's food supply, are central to the reforms. Initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda are providing improved seeds, fertilisers, and modern farming techniques to raise productivity.

The Minister further explained that President Tinubu's policies are designed to cut reliance on food imports. By empowering local farmers and agribusinesses, the government hopes to create jobs, boost incomes, and make Nigeria a competitive player in regional food markets.
According to Kyari, the administration's vision is to see a Nigeria where every household enjoys affordable, homegrown food. He urged citizens and private sector partners to support the efforts, saying the reforms will secure both economic growth and food independence.
