The Nigeria Gemstone and Jewellery Expo has officially opened in Ibadan, Oyo State, with a focus on creating sustainable development opportunities and attracting investment into the gemstone sector.
The event, organised by the Gemstone Miners and Marketers Association of Nigeria (GMMAN), is bringing together local and international dealers, industry operators, policymakers, and other stakeholders to explore funding options that will drive growth across the value chain.
According to GMMAN President, Adeniran Ajibade, the theme of the conference, "Financing Sustainable Practices in Gemstone Mining and Processing, Jewellery Production and Marketing," is designed to provide a roadmap for the sector's advancement. He stressed the need for Nigeria to add more value through production, processing, and local usage of gemstones.

Ajibade identified funding as one of the major challenges limiting the sector's progress, explaining that while mining is generally considered high risk, financing for trading and processing could be less risky. He noted that the conference would provide opportunities to learn from operators who have successfully sourced funding for their projects.
The three-day conference, holding at the University of Ibadan International Conference Centre, will run from 25 to 27 August. Key topics for discussion include government support for investment, efficient mining techniques, and unlocking the potential of Nigeria's jewellery industry.
