The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has urged the Federal Government to prioritise the mining sector in Northern Nigeria, describing it as a key driver of industrial growth, job creation, and poverty reduction.
Speaking at the maiden Northern Nigeria Investment and Industrialisation Summit in Abuja, NEF Chairman, Professor Ango Abdullahi, said the region's vast mineral resources remain largely untapped despite their potential to transform the economy.

Abdullahi stressed that with proper infrastructure—such as roads, railways, and electricity—mining could rival agriculture in boosting industrialisation and lifting millions out of poverty. He recalled how the North thrived in the 1960s and 1970s through cotton, groundnuts, and tobacco before oil shifted attention away from other sectors.
The summit, themed "Unlocking Northern Nigeria's Mining, Agricultural and Power Potentials (MAP2035)," was presented as a 10-year blueprint for socio-economic transformation.
NEF concluded by calling for collaboration between government, private investors, and development partners to drive mining reforms and position the North as an economic powerhouse.
