The Gateway State International Airport, Ilishan-Remo, has been hailed as one of the most significant investments of the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration, with elders and government officials describing it as a catalyst for trade, industry, and SME growth in Ogun State.
Speaking during an inspection tour, Chairman of the Governor's Elders Advisory Council, Chief Olu Okuboyejo, praised the world-class facilities, noting that the airport stands shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the best globally. He described it as "the best long-term investment" for the state, adding that its economic benefits will multiply over the next two to three decades.
Chief Okuboyejo called for International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) approval to allow international flights, a move he said would generate additional revenue, boost exports, and support Ogun's fast-growing industrial and SME ecosystem.
Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Gbenga Dairo, explained that the airport was designed as an anchor project for industrial clusters across the state, particularly the Remo Economic Corridor. With facilities such as cargo warehouses, an independent power plant, and modern passenger terminals, the airport is expected to ease logistics for local manufacturers, agro-producers, and SMEs, making it cheaper and faster to move goods and people.
Airport Manager, Captain Dapo Olumide, confirmed that the first commercial flight will commence operations next week Tuesday, with passengers already booking from Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, Abeokuta, and other parts of Ogun State.
The Gateway International Airport is positioned not only as a transport hub but also as a driver of commerce, tourism, and industrial growth — a development stakeholders say could redefine Ogun's economic future.
